Lumpiang Shanghai with a Twist

When we are talking about birthdays, fiestas, parties, or any Pinoy celebrations, the first thing that comes in our mind is the 'Lumpiang Shanghai.' Many of your friends will definitely cheer you saying "mag-uwi ka ng shanghai" or "mag-Sharon (balot) ka ng shanghai" whenever you are attending to a birthday celebration. Lumpiang Shanghai  then turn to be as a bida of any party. Just like spaghetti, a birthday party or any celebrations would not be completed if there's no lumpiang shanghai as handa on table. 

Since lumpiang shanghai is now gaining more and more popularity in social media and to the Gen Z, we will talk about this favorite Filipino dish here in our today's blog. Thankful that I got invited in one of the events serving Filipino dishes that's why I got a chance to taste and feature their special lumpiang shanghai here in our today's story.

Lumpiang shanghai or known in English as spring roll is one of a popular Filipino dishes. It is usually made of ground pork mixed with chopped carrots, garlic, onions, kinchay, and scrambled egg wrapped in a white lumpia wrapper. They were usually in small sizes. It was best dipped with spicy sweet chili sauce. 

But in the recent event that I have attended, they served a special kind of lumpiang shanghai for our lunch. Yes, it's a special spring roll because it comes with a twist!

Oh well to speed up your curiosity, here is the said lumpiang shanghai with a twist that was served to us for lunch:

Ok, have you seen our special lumpiang shanghai served to us? Can you guess what makes this spring roll different or extra special than the ordinary lumpiang shanghai that we usually eat?  

Well, I'll discuss with you what makes this spring roll a special lumpiang shanghai with a twist!

First as you can see in the photo, aside from the ground pork which is the main ingredients of the usual lumpiang shanghai, this spring roll has a shrimp! Yes, there is a shrimp inside the fried lumpia wrapper! The shrimp was mixed or went together with the ground pork making our lumpiang shanghai extra-ordinary special!

Second as you can see, there is no sweet and spicy chili sauce as sawsawan for this lumpiang shanghai. Instead, its main sauce or sawsawan is a vinegar from the province mixed with onions, garlic, and green chili. 

But the vinegar sawsawan is not enough! There is also crashed of carrots with basil leaves on the side where you can dip the spring rolls.

And to make this special lumpiang shanghai more flavorful, green onion leaves were sprinkle on top of these crunchy fried lumpiang shanghai! They were so yummy that you can't missed any bites!

So now you know why are lumpiang shanghai, our favorite Filipino dish is some special! It comes with a twist making it more delightful! :)
